Get Out, Keep Left, Move Over and Shut Up
Of all the dirty little nuances in the English language why are these four some of the most mind-numbing directives to come across? I still am not sure what’s going on here with these, but they are certainly the source of much grief for me.
Get Out. Well, um, okay. Can you help me get some? I don’t really have any Out at the moment, hence you noticed that already. Do you have any I could borrow? Why didn’t I hang on to it when I last had it? Did I lose it? Did you take it? And why is it a priority all of a sudden? Every time I lose my Out I seem to be in trouble because people remind me so harshly. Sometimes they even point, but I can still never find it.
Keep Left. Why are we so infatuated with something which has been so completely abandoned by the five senses? I’ve never seen Left, or smelled Left or even touched Left, and yet it’s so hard to hold on to. Nobody can seem to grab this one, but we are constantly reminded not to lose it. At least with this one we are given the benefit of the doubt. Keep Left. It’s so nice, not like Get Out. Someone once told me I was Left Out. Wow, I had both of them, together! But this did not seem like a good thing.
Move Over. Okay. You don’t like where it is? How shall I move it? In a movie, people spend millions of dollars on the Over, preparing it, putting it right where it needs to be, and now it’s up to me to move it? Why doesn’t anyone tell me to move starting? Sometimes after shopping we have money Left Over. Oh no! ...What? That’s good? Oh, ok. Then why aren’t there signs saying keep money? I guess that would go against every fabric of advertising. They could have some of my Left that I kept, but they still seem worried I will misplace it.
Shut Up. -Okay... -No, shut up... -Okay... No, I mean it, shut up...This was a regular conversation between 2 roommates at my college. The verbal agreement is the very crux of overall denial. Shut, ok got it. Up...wait, what? Shut down seems more appropriate. Wouldn’t that be great for your kids? “Shut down”, and as they immediately enter into a peaceful parade rest your Calgon moment is ready for the taking. But alas, Up is where it was meant to be and Up is where it will remain. Speaking of which, I think it’s time for this article to follow suit thusly in its own rhetoric.
